Elspeth Beard brings pioneering adventure to Wilton Legends

A pioneering figure in long-distance motorcycling and architecture, Elspeth Beard will join this year’s Wilton Legends (June 19-21, 2026) as a speaker. Best known as the first British woman to ride a motorcycle around the globe, Beard has seen the wide world up close – and she will share her insights with those visitors to Wilton House.

Trained as an architect, she balanced her professional career with an extraordinary journey that saw her travel over 35,000 miles across Europe, Asia, Australia and North America on a BMW R60/6. Undertaken in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the journey predated modern navigation and support networks, demanding self-sufficiency and mechanical ingenuity at every stage.

Following her return, Beard established a successful architectural practice, specialising in the restoration and adaptation of historic buildings, including award-winning projects such as Munstead Tower in Surrey. Her work reflects a similar ethos to her travels, combining respect for heritage with practical perseverance.

In later years, her story has gained wider recognition through writing and public speaking, offering insight into both the physical and personal challenges of long-distance travel – resilience, curiosity and independence. Bringing together adventure, design and lived experience, Beard offers a unique perspective on endurance and exploration. Her appearance is set to be one of the must-see experiences at Wilton House.
